Salem College Libraries: Borrowing From Other Libraries

Need a book or an article, but Salem doesn't own it? Get it from another library!

Need a book or an article, but Salem doesn't own it? Get it from another library, either through TALA or Interlibrary Loan!

What is Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service that allows Salem's patrons to borrow materials that Salem doesn’t own from libraries throughout the United States (and from other countries, if necessary). Currently enrolled Salem College students, as well as College faculty and staff, may use Interlibrary Loan.

What is TALA?

Currently enrolled Salem College students and currently employed faculty and staff may borrow books directly from Wake Forest's Z. Smith Reynolds Library, as well as 9 other academic libraries in the Triad region. See "TALA Library Agreement" for more information. ILL requests may still be submitted if you prefer for items to be mailed to Gramley Library.

Before traveling to a TALA library or submitting an Interlibrary Loan request for a journal, magazine, or newspaper article:

  1. Search the title of the publication in WorldCat Local to determine if the article is available from the library’s print or online collections.
  2. Check Google Scholar  - type in the title of the article within quotation marks. Look for a pdf or link to the article.
  1. Find an item in WorldCat Local that you would like and open its detailed record by clicking on the title.
  2. If we do not hold the item or the item is not available for checkout, click the "Request from Another Library" button.
  3. Fill out the contact information in the form that appears - you must include your Salem email address - and submit your request.
  4. You will be notified when your request has been filled.

About Interlibrary Loan

Most types of materials may be requested via ILL for the purpose of supporting your academic research needs, including books, articles, and audio-visual materials. Most libraries do not lend reference books and special collection materials.

Items that CANNOT be ordered via ILL:

  • Articles that are available from Salem's print and online resources
  • Assigned course materials such as textbooks, reading lists, and reserve items
  • E-Books and computer software

All ILL notifications are sent by email, including due date reminders.  Please monitor your email address with regularity after submitting your ILL requests.

ILL Eligibility

Using Interlibrary Loan, current Salem Academy & College students, faculty, and staff may borrow materials that are not accessible from Salem's collections from other libraries.

Cost

Salem does not charge faculty, staff, or students for Interlibrary Loan items if the item is retrieved within ten days after notification of its availability is sent AND it is returned on time. However, all borrowers are subject to fines for late return ($1.00 per day), damage or loss (replacement costs), or failure to pick up a requested item ($5.00 fee).

Shipping

Allow at least (2) weeks for delivery of books - allow at least three (3) weeks for audio/visual materials. Because we cannot guarantee a quick turnaround time from the lending library, there is no "rush delivery" available. Your item(s) will be held for you at the circulation desk when they arrive.

Checkout Period & Renewals

The lending library determines due dates for the items borrowed.  The typical borrowing period is 21-30 days. You may request a renewal before your item is due; however, renewals are provided at the discretion of the lending library. Please submit your renewal requests a minimum of three (3) business days prior to your ILL item's due date. Overdue items incur fines of $1.00 per day.

Need assistance?

Please direct your ILL inquiries to Anna Milholland, Public Services Librarian: anna.milholland@salem.edu or 917-5420.   You may also email interlibrary.loan@salem.edu.

According to the agreement with the Triad Academic Library Association ("TALA"), current Salem College students, staff, and faculty may borrow circulating books directly from any of the following libraries:

More information about the TALA agreement is available here.

All will be asked to show a valid photo ID AND be prepared to confirm your status as a currently enrolled or employed Salem College community member. For example, a Salem student may be required to confirm enrollment by looking up her course schedule in SIS; Salem staff and faculty members may be asked to find their names in the Salem Directory (link is located on the Salem College's home page, next to "MySalem") and/or on a department's home page.
