This Guide was adapted from the Citation Guides done by Scott Pfitzinger at Butler University Library and Kathy Shields at High Point University.

Different styles format citations differently. The citation style usually depends on the academic discipline involved.

To use this LibGuide, select the Citation Style tab required and explore the different examples given.

Check with your professor to make sure you use the required style. And whatever style you choose, BE CONSISTENT!

  • MLA (Modern Language Association) style is typically used by the Humanities
  • APA (American Psychology Association) style is often used by Education and Psychology
  • Chicago/Turabian (University of Chicago Press) is generally used by History, Business, and some of the Fine Arts
  • CSE (Council of Science Editors), formerly known as CBE, is usually used to reference biology and medical sources
  • ASA (American Sociological Association) is intended for authors who are preparing manuscripts for publication in American Sociological Association journals.
